The Needles District attracts thousands of hikers, some inexperienced. One fairly common—and serious—problem is that inexperienced hikers underestimate how much time it takes to complete a hike and get caught by nightfall, in many cases without a flashlight or headlamp.

Even with a flashlight or headlamp, following Needles trails at night can be challenging. Most trails have slickrock sections and go along canyon washes, making it easy to miss a cairn and get off the trail. Be extra careful not to underestimate the time a hike will take or overestimate your physical abilities, keeping in mind that summer heat can significantly slow you down.
